Description

Y's for Men, Red Label - Yohji Yamamoto Collection: Archive (2000s) Item: MG-B52-XXX Composition: Cotton, Rayon Made in Japan. This oversize cotton shirt comes from the limited edition Y's for Men Red Label line. It features a classic tailored cut with a rounded front hem, a high-low effect where the back hem is longer than the front, and side gussets. These design choices result in a more fluid and dynamic silhouette. The shirt has two buttoned patch pockets, a utility slot above the left pocket (for a pen or other tool), and a hang loop (aka locker loop) on the back. No size is indicated but it was probably meant to be around a 3 (or Large) though for contemporary Yohji style it fits more like a 2. This model shirt was made in a range of materials and colours, and this design has the item number MG-B52 followed by an indicator of the fabric, 014 for black cotton, 015 for brown cotton, etc. The material tag is difficult to read from dry cleaning, common for garments of this age that have been regularly cleaned. However based on what is visible and the other Red Label shirts in my personal collection I am reasonably certain that the item number would be as I have listed it it were still legible, and that this is a cotton rayon blend. It is in good previously-owned condition, with a few spots (see photos) and no structural flaws. Approximate Measurements: • Chest: 24” (61 cm) • Length: 30 ½” (77.5 cm) • Shoulders: 19 ½” (49.5 cm) • Sleeve Length: 24 ¼” (61.5 cm) • Hem: 24 ¾” (63 cm) The Y's for Men Red Label line was a limited edition collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto and Michiko Suzuki (a protege of Yohji's who had worked as a lead pattern-maker) launched in the 2000s. Inspired by exploring the feelings of "love" and "hate" this line is one of my personal favourites of Yohji's archival work to collect. The Y's for Men Red Label pieces are always unique while also calling back to the materials, design, tailoring, and craft of pieces in the YFM and YPPH lines. This men's line is in some ways related to, but shouldn't be confused with, the "Y's Red Label" collection for women launched in the late 2000s. Y's for Men was Yohji Yamamoto's first and original menswear line which ran from 1979 to 2009. He created it based on the idea of clothing for men that would complement his Y's line for women thereby "enabling a man to look his best when standing next to her." The Y's for Men line has always been inspired by Yohji's personal wardrobe. In 2023 the Y's for Men line returned after 13 years and is now a current line again. Notes Offers welcome.
